Situated on the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside, the town of Birkenhead lies directly across the River Mersey from Liverpool.
Known as a busy port and centre for ship building - a large section of the local economy is based around the world famous Cammell Laird shipyard - the town is primarily industrial in nature. But Birkenhead also offers a wide array of shops and leisure attractions for visitors to enjoy, one of the most popular being the beautiful Birkenhead Park.
Centred around the many listed buildings that line the edges of Hamilton Square, the town was largely constructed in a grid formation and is home to many examples of fine historic architecture. One of most impressive of these is the town hall, which was constructed towards the end of the nineteenth century in a Classical style and is one of the most recognisable sights on the town's skyline.
